Warden Security Message

Warden Message

U.S. Embassy Khartoum
June 19, 2009

This Warden Message informs U.S. citizens that the verdict in the trial of individuals charged with the January 1, 2008 murder of two U.S. Embassy employees is scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. U.S. citizens are advised to maintain a low profile and avoid the Khartoum North courthouse, located in downtown Khartoum. The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that a group calling itself "Al-Qaida in the Land between the Two Niles" has issued threats against the U.S. government and U.S. citizens in Sudan, which referenced the January 1,2008 murders, and proclaimed that the group's "jihad and fight against the United States of America and its allies of crusaders and apostates will continue. "The Department of State continues to warn against all travel to Sudan, particularly in the Darfur area, where violence between government forces, rebel factions, and various armed militias continues.

American citizens who choose to travel to Sudan despite the existing Travel Warning, and those currently in Sudan, should review their security posture and take appropriate precautions. Americans living or traveling in Sudan are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate through the Department of State's Travel Registration website (http://travel.state.gov) so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security within Sudan. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the embassy or consulate to contact them in case of emergency. The U.S. Embassy is located at Sharia Ali Abdul Latif, Khartoum; tel. 249-187-016000 (outside Sudan) and 0187-016000 (inside Sudan). U.S. citizens may schedule an appointment to apply for American Citizen Services through the Embassy's website: http://sudan.usembassy.gov. For emergencies, please call the Embassy and ask to be connected to the duty officer.
