Warden Security Messages

May 14, 2008

Demonstration near Presidential Palace and Martyr's Square This Warden Message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to a demonstration that is scheduled to take place in downtown Khartoum tomorrow, May 14, from approximately 8 am to 11am in the area between the Presidential Palace and Martyr's Square. The demonstration is being organized to protest the recent rebel attacks in Omdurman. Americans are advised to avoid unnecessary movements in areas close to the downtown area. We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.

All citizens living or traveling in Sudan are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the Department of State's website, http://travel.state.gov, to obtain updated information regarding travel and security within Sudan. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.

The U.S. Embassy is located at Sharia Ali Abdul Latif, Khartoum; tel. (249-183) 774-700/1/2/3 (outside Sudan); tel (0183) 774-700/1/2/3 (inside Sudan). Americans may call between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday or email: KhartoumConsular_DL@state.gov. For after-hours emergencies, please call 0-183-774-700 and ask to be connected to the duty officer.
