Warden Message

U.S. Embassy Khartoum
May 4, 2009

Sudan forbids entry of animals and animal products into country

This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens that on April 30, the Government of Sudan's (GOS) Ministry of Animal Resources issued a decree prohibiting the importation of all animals, including domestic pets, or animal products into Sudan until further notice.

The Government of Sudan maintains that this new ban is necessary to protect its citizens from 2009-H1N1 Influenza, sometimes referred to as swine flu, that it believes could be transmitted by animals.  Even if travelers have complete international documentation certifying the health of their pets along with necessary records of vaccinations, Sudanese officials will refuse entry for such animals.  Those flying into Khartoum International Airport will be informed that they either must send cats, dogs or other domestic animals on an outgoing flight or agree to their destruction.

The US Embassy is not aware of any GOS public announcement or written instructions provided to air carriers on this change in policy.  Airport authorities are strictly enforcing the ban.   Travelers are advised not to seek to enter Sudan with animals of any kind while the current policy, which the edict says is indefinite, remains in effect.

U.S. citizens traveling in Sudan despite the current Travel Warning should regularly monitor the US Embassy website for updates regarding the security situation in Sudan: http://sudan.usembassy.gov/. U.S. citizens should register their presence in Sudan with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the Department of State's website (http://travel.state.gov/) and obtain updated information regarding travel and security within Sudan. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.

The U.S. Embassy is located at Sharia Ali Abdul Latif, Khartoum; tel. 249-183)774-700/1/2/3 (outside Sudan); tel (0183) 774-700/1/2/3 (inside Sudan). Americans may contact Embassy by phone or email KhartoumConsular@state.gov. For emergencies, please call the Embassy and ask to be connected to the duty officer.
