Warden Message
Demonstrations
January 6, 2009
This Warden Message updates information issued on January 4. U.S. citizens should be aware that during demonstrations in recent days near the U.S. Embassy and elsewhere in Khartoum, some speakers have made threats against U.S. and other Western citizens in Sudan. Demonstrations near the U.S. Embassy, by protesters opposed to recent Israeli operations in Gaza, have been orderly and included a large police presence. They have on average drawn 250 protesters, most of whom have been students. During a January 5 demonstration near the U.S. Embassy, at least one speaker called for attacks against foreigners in Khartoum and named specific locations including Afra Mall, O-Zone, Amwag Restaurant, and the neighborhoods of Riyad, Taif, El Mamora, and Garden City. The US Embassy advises all American citizens to avoid establishments known to be frequented by westerners and maintain a low-profile. A city-wide demonstration is expected on either Wednesday, January 7 or Thursday, January 8, during which the US Embassy advises all Americans to avoid the downtown area and public places. January 7 is a public holiday and the US Embassy will be closed. The Embassy's regular operating hours may change based on the security environment. American citizens who choose to travel to Sudan despite the existing Travel Warning, and those currently in Sudan, should review their security posture and take appropriate precautions. Additionally, American citizens already in Sudan should monitor news reports and keep sufficient provisions on hand to sustain themselves for several days should the need arise. U.S. citizens living or traveling in Sudan should register their presence in Sudan with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the Department of State's website (http://travel.state.gov/) and obtain updated information regarding travel and security within Sudan. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency. The U.S. Embassy is located at Sharia Ali Abdul Latif, Khartoum; tel. (249-183)774-700/1/2/3 (outside Sudan); tel (0183) 774-700/1/2/3 (inside Sudan). Americans may call between the Embassy's operating hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday or email:KhartoumConsular@state.gov. For after-hours emergencies, please call 0-183-774-700 and ask to be connected to the duty officer.
