Warden Message

Demonstrations

January 4, 2009

This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to Israeli military
operations in the Gaza Strip and Palestinian rocket strikes into
Israel.  The escalation of hostilities within the Gaza Strip has
resulted in a strong possibility of public demonstrations and
potential for disruption of traffic in Khartoum. Demonstrations have
and may continue to occur near the US Embassy, other Embassies, and
government buildings. We remind American citizens that even
demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and
possibly escalate into violence.  American citizens are therefore
urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to
exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.

American citizens should stay current with media coverage of local
events and be aware of their surroundings at all times. If you have an
appointment at the US Embassy in Khartoum, please call ahead to
confirm that the Embassy is open and accessible.

American citizens who choose to travel to Sudan despite the existing
Travel Warning, and those currently in Sudan, should review their
security posture and take appropriate precautions.  U.S. citizens
living or traveling in Sudan should register their presence in Sudan
with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the Department of
State's website (http://travel.state.gov/) and obtain updated
information regarding travel and security within Sudan.  By
registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to
contact them in case of emergency.

The U.S. Embassy is located at Sharia Ali Abdul Latif, Khartoum; tel.
(249-183)774-700/1/2/3 (outside Sudan); tel (0183) 774-700/1/2/3
(inside Sudan).  Americans may call between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday or email:
KhartoumConsular@state.gov.  For after-hours emergencies, please call
0-183-774-700 and ask to be connected to the duty officer.
