The United States Embassy in Khartoum advises all American citizens in Central Equatoria State (Bahr al Jabal) to limit their movements and exercise extreme caution when traveling in the area, including Juba town. Caution should also be exercised in Eastern Equatoria State and Lakes State. There have been incidents of insecurity involving armed groups in each of these states.
On the afternoon of November 13, four armed men in military uniforms attempted to carjack a U.S. government vehicle in central Juba. The identity of the assailants has not been established, and the driver of the U.S. government vehicle escaped without injury.
Americans living or traveling in Sudan, including Juba and the surrounding area, are encouraged to take prudent steps to ensure personal safety. Remain aware of your surroundings, maintain a low profile, carry personal identification, always drive with doors locked and windows up, and avoid large crowds or demonstrations. Americans can register with the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum through the State Department's travel registration website, http://travelregistration.state.gov, and should consult the website to obtain updated information on travel and security within Sudan. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the Embassy by calling 0183-774-701/2/3 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Registration forms are also available at the U.S. Consulate General in Juba.
