Warden Message—Threat of Terrorist Action Against US Government Interests
August 17, 2007
The U.S. Embassy advises all U.S. citizens in Sudan that it has received credible information that an extremist group based in the country may target U.S. government interests or facilities. As noted in the Department of State Public Announcements dated May 14 and January 4, 2007 and the Worldwide Caution of April 10, 2007, terrorist actions may include suicide operations, bombings, hijackings, hostage taking, kidnappings and assassinations. Terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets.
U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness. Americans should regularly evaluate their personal security practices, exercise caution near likely targets, and take prudent steps to ensure personal safety.
All Americans living or traveling in Sudan are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department’s travel registration website, http://travelregistration.state.gov/, to obtain updated information on travel and security within Sudan. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the United States Embassy in Khartoum. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency. The U.S. Embassy is located at Sharia Ali Abdul Latif, Khartoum; tel. (249-183) 774-701/2/3 (outside Sudan); tel. (0183) 774-701/2/3 inside Sudan. Americans may call between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. For after-hours emergencies, please call 249-183-774-705 and leave a message for the Consular Duty Officer.
