On the occasion of International Education Week (November 13-17), the U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Roberto Powers, accompanied by the Embassy Public Affairs Section, visited the Department of English in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Khartoum.  During the visit to Sudan’s oldest institution of higher education (it was founded in 1902), Mr. Powers explained that the Embassy was donating a collection of more than 150 books on American literature and English teaching as a gesture of strengthened U.S.-Sudan cultural and educational ties.

The English Department faculty accompanied the Embassy delegation to see the collection of books donated to the Faculty of Arts in 1990 when the former American Center closed its doors.  That collection, along with the original American Center sign, survives in a dedicated room in the Faculty of Arts’ main library.

Although the faculty at the University of Khartoum’s Department of English regretted the disappearance of the American Center, they were hopeful that the future would bring more U.S. Embassy sponsored cultural programming as well as English language instruction.
