Cultural diplomacy on Sudan University campuses
On March 5, the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section visited Sudan University’s College of Fine Arts and College of Music and Drama in Khartoum. The visit gave Embassy staff an opportunity to see the popular sculpture garden on the campus of the College of Fine Arts, as well as observe aspiring young Sudanese artists in their workshops, including sculpture, ceramics, calligraphy, and painting. At the College of Music and Drama, classrooms came alive with the sounds from a multitude of musical instruments played by young musicians. The respective colleges each received hundreds of different books on the arts. College administrators welcomed the gesture and expressed interest in rekindling cultural and educational exchanges and activities with the United States. Sudan University, the principal institution in North Sudan where students can study fine arts, music, and drama, has faculty members who have studied in the United States and are now teaching their craft to young artists.
