White House Malaria Summit raised during college campus visit
On December 13, the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section visited Omdurman Ahlia University. Located in the former Sudanese capital of Omdurman, the community funded university is the first higher education institution in Sudan to establish bachelor’s degree programs in Environmental Studies, Medical Laboratories, and Computer Sciences. A visit highlight was a tour of the Faculty of Health Sciences’ Department of Medical Laboratories Sciences. In one of the laboratories, the staff invited the Public Affairs Officer to use a microscope to view a sample of Plasmodium falciparum, the parasites that cause malaria. Malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Sudan, according to the World Health Organization.
At Ahlia, students can specialize in chemical pathology, microbiology, parasitology and entomology, histopathology and cytology, and haematology and blood transfusion. Coming on the eve of the White House Summit on Malaria, the visit gave the Public Affairs Section an opportunity to discuss the summit and to share the White House fact sheets on malaria.
