PAS Visit to Abdel-Karim Mirghani Cultural Center

On October 4, 2006, the Public Affairs Section of the United States Embassy in Khartoum visited Abdel-Karim Mirghani Cultural Center in Sudan’s intellectual capital Omdurman. The center is a non-governmental and non-profit cultural foundation for Sudanese and foreigners who live in Sudan.  It was founded in 1998 in memory of Abdel-Karim Mirghani, a Sudanese intellectual and diplomat.  One of the center's primary objectives is to serve the youth population of the greater Khartoum metropolitan area.  In addition, the center offers vocational training to young women who have been displaced by conflict.

The Embassy donated approximately 150 U.S. books, in English and in Arabic, to the center's library.  The Public Affairs Section also discussed the importance of fostering mutual understanding and the need for Sudanese citizens to learn more about the United States. The center’s staff expressed enthusiasm at the prospect of closer links with the U.S. Embassy through collaboration on different future programs.
