About Sudan

The South

Some of the south’s main problems are caused by its tremendous size and its lack of transportation.  The natural means of travel in Sudan, the Nile River, turns into a huge swamp (Sudd) in the south. The Jonglei Canal, helps alleviate this problem of transportation.

In addition to the problems of transportation, the south is strongly tribal in its make-up and lacks the sense of national identity that is found in the north.

As a result of the nomadic way of life, there has been no wide-scale agricultural use of the land.  The south has enormous areas of grazing land and sufficient rainfall to successfully promote agriculture.  There are presently several programs by which the Government of Sudan is attempting to extend the use of the country’s present resources.
