The U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section, in collaboration with the African Regional Services (ARS-Paris)*, held a Digital Video Conference on “Study in the U.S.” on October 22, 2007. The DVC, held at the Public Diplomacy Office at the U.S. Embassy, allowed 28 guests representing nine universities, the Khartoum American School and a prominent newspaper reporter to interact with interlocutors in Paris.

The “Study in the U.S.” panel was moderated by Susan Perry, Chair of the Department of International and Comparative Politics at the American University of Paris, and included three U.S. students studying in France, Denica Beaton, Kristen Hurst and David Angeles. The panelists answered more than a dozen questions that covered a number of issues ranging from English language training, exchange programs, distance education, and so on. One of the panelists also made reference to the www.fastweb.com website as a valuable tool to search for information on scholarships.

Participants also picked handouts obtained from the educationusa.state.gov website for information on scholarships and student visas that were not covered by the DVC.

The DVC and a mini-tour of the Public Diplomacy section at the Embassy gave the participants a wealth of information on the issue of “Studying in the U.S.”, allowed them to network with each other, and provided them with the opportunity to hear about the Public Diplomacy efforts to reach out to the Sudanese public and to meet their information needs about the U.S., its people and its cultures.

* Africa Regional Services (ARS) Paris is the primary source of French-language books and other materials for U.S. embassies throughout Francophone Africa, including those in the Maghreb and also in Haiti, as well as a major source of speakers and performing artists for all posts on the African continent.

It is a branch of the Department of State's Bureau of African Affairs and was established in 1962 as a center for cultural and information programs and services in French.
