Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists
Sudanese journalist goes to U.S. on prestigious tour
Wafaa Kamil Elamin, a columnist with one of Sudan’s largest circulation English dailies, “Khartoum Monitor,” took part in the Africa Regional “Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists” April 9-28, 2007. The Public Affairs Section hosted Ms. Elamin.
Since returning to Khartoum, Ms. Elamin has filed several stories about her experience in the United States as an International Visitor. For example, on May 8, “Khartoum Monitor” published Elamin’s “Reflections on Murrow program,” in which she laid out the objectives of the Murrow program, and the fact that it was sponsored and organized by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. “It was my first time joining an American program and visiting the U.S.A. What drew my attention was the diversity of the people, which is clearly seen in the government, NGOs, academic and public spheres,” she wrote.
Elamin described Americans as “friendly and helpful,” adding “They have nothing to do with the policies. They are proud of their history and community and volunteer their time to let others know about U.S.A.”
