Shopper's Guide

Shopping

Popular shopping areas are: Gamhouria Avenue, Street 15, New Extension, Khartoum II, Riyadh,  Afra Shopping Mall (opened 02/04) and Omdurman market.  The main shopping areas of Khartoum are located on Gamhouria Avenue and New Extention Street No. 15.  There are numerous stores supplying a variety of items, including food, clothing (local and imported), perfumes (mostly imported from France but bottled in Sudan), and cosmetics.

Grocery Shops

AlIkhwa Grocery Shop: Located on Gamhouria Street across from SATA shoe store.

ATLAS Supermarket: Located in Khartoum II across from the Little India Restaurant.

Farouq Grocery Store: Located on the corner of the Khartoum II market crossroads on the first floor of Farouq building.

SAFCO:  Street 1 New Extension Mohamed Najeeb side across from the cemetery.

Freeway, Fantasia, and Hawi:   A few of the well-supplied grocery stores located in one row on the busy Street 15, New Extension.

Looli AlAmarat Grocery: Located on Street 1, New Extension, after the German Club.  This grocery store stocks imported items including fresh fruits and vegetables.

Saudi Grocery Store: Located on middle Road in Riyadh has a variety of imported groceries and household items.  Items for sale in this location are sometimes more expensive than other locations.

Afra Shopping Mall: This recently opened indoor mall is located south of the Airport on Africa Road, past the “Green Square” on the left side of the road. This mall contain a large food hall (mostly goods imported from Turkey) designer clothes and shoe shops, a Beauty center, bowling alley, and a Cinema and much more. It’s definitely worth a visit!

Pastry Shops

Turkish Bakery: This is a chain of bakeries distributed at various locations around Khartoum.  This bakery produces a variety of well-made cakes, breads, cookies, and ice cream.   Three of them are situated on Parliament Street in Khartoum, Khartoum II, across from TAMARA flower/pastry store on the road leading to the New Extension area, and on the main street of Garden City, opposite the turn off street that leads to the Townhouses.

Paradise Bakery: Open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.  daily.  This Syrian owned bakery sells tasty and beautifully decorated cakes and pastries.  Orders can be placed by calling  83-485447 or 83-485445.  Also available at this shop, are a selection of takeaway sandwiches available from 6:00 p.m.

Beauty Shops and Centers

Shalimar and Cleopatra Beauty: Located on Street 15, these two centers provide beauty care including hairdressing, manicure, waxing and other beauty services.   Communication can sometimes be difficult  at these locations, as English is not widely spoken.

Mekk Nimir Pharmacy/Beauty Saloon: Located on Riyadh Road going west, after the Yestabshiroon Clinic.  The Center is on the second floor of the building.  Offers a variety of beauty and cosmetic treatments including hairdressing and manicure/pedicure. Call for an appointment at 83-238030 and ask for the Beauty Center.

Afra Shopping Mall: Beauty Saloon is located on the second floor.

Souvenirs

Gold and silver jewelry, beads and local handicrafts, can also be purchased on Gamhouria Street.  Many of these shops are located in the arcade of the Sahara Hotel.  The same things may be less expensive in the Omdurman Souk. Once you are familiar with the different shopping areas it is interesting and enjoyable to shop in Khartoum.

Another favorite shop for Arts and Crafts is the “African Look” run by a group of southern women. It is located south of the airport, after the “Green Square”, take the first road on your left and the shop in on the right side of the road.  Unfortunately it’s not very well sign-posted and can be a bit difficult to find. Most of the Embassy Chauffeurs know this shop.  This is an African traditional handicraft shop where you can find tie-dyed shirts and other outfits, beads, crochet work, calabashes, gourds, baskets, and many other items.  Don’t miss a visit to this lovely shop.   Opening hours are from Monday through Saturday mornings 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Closed on Fridays, Sundays and local holidays.
