Shopper's Guide

Introduction

The purpose of this basic Shopper’s guide is to help acquaint newcomers with the various shops in Khartoum and Omdurman.  Many things can be found in Khartoum if you only know where to look!  Although some items you may need have been listed in this guide, there are still many other useful products on shelves throughout the Khartoum-Omdurman area.

Shopkeepers are very friendly and helpful.  Many speak English, but if they don’t, one can manage with a few numbers in Arabic, hand gestures, and a smile.  It is a good idea to carry a sheet with the numbers in Arabic with you.

It is advisable to take as much change as possible when shopping.  There is always a shortage and if you don’t have it some shopkeepers may have to ask you to wait while they get it.  Shopkeepers are generally friendly and courteous and may even order tea for you to drink while examining their wares.

At the Souk you will have plenty of help.  The “bag boys” will trail around after you hoping you will give them the job of carrying your purchases.  Some boys will also translate for you.  Either be very firm at the beginning in saying no or choose a particular boy to carry the basket and let him be responsible for discouraging others from following you.  After a few regular visits to the souk, you may find the same boy searching for you.
Please remember to dress modestly when in public.  Avoid sun dresses, shorts, tight-fitting trousers and all sleeveless dresses or tops.

Once you start investigating these shops on your own you may wish to add items to the list provided in this guide.  It would be most helpful to others if you would share your discoveries with the CLO so they can be included in the next edition of the Shopper’s Guide.
