Personal Statement from Secretary Rice for the January 23, 2008 memorial
service of John Granville and Abdulrahman Abbas Rahama in Juba, Sudan.

Today we remember and honor the lives of John Granville and Abdulrahman
Abbas Rahama, two exceptional individuals taken from us suddenly and
cruelly. I, along with the entire U.S. diplomatic community, join you
in commemorating their work and their sacrifice.

John and Abdulrahman gave their lives in helping the people of Sudan
seek peace and a better life. They understood that in achieving
democracy the people of Sudan would be free to realize their promise and
pursue a brighter future. Their sacrifice represents in the most
poignant and meaningful way the mission of the United States in Sudan.
In carrying out that mission and implementing the Comprehensive Peace
Agreement, we honor their lives.

On behalf of the United States, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the
families and friends of John and Abdulrahman. I express my deep
appreciation for their work and their sacrifice. And I renew the
commitment of the United States to help the people of Sudan achieve the
peace, freedom, and prosperity they so greatly deserve.
