About Sudan

Khartoum American School

The Khartoum American School is an independent, co-educational day school that offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities.  The

school was founded in 1956.  The school year is comprised of four quarters of approximately nine weeks each and extends from mid-August to the end of May.

Organization: The school is governed by a 7-member School Board, 6 of whom are elected for 2-year terms by the Khartoum American School parents’ association and one who is appointed by the U.S. Ambassador.  Membership in the association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school as well as the full-time teaching staff.

Curriculum: The curriculum is commensurate to that in U.S. Public School Systems.  The language of instruction is English and the textbooks are American.  Curriculum includes Math, Science, English, Physical Education, History, and either French or Arabic.  The rotating electives are Art, Music, and Computer Studies.  American students have little or no difficulty moving from or to schools in the United States.  The school testing program utilizes standardized achievement tests administered to all students as well as PSAT and SAT.  The school is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Faculty: There are 23 (including the superintendent) full-time,  three part-time faculty members and nine Teaching Assistants.  Of the total staff members, twelve are U.S. citizens.

Enrollment: Enrollment at the beginning of the 2001-02 school year was 169.  Of the total,  21 were U.S. citizens, 21 were host-country nationals and 115 were children of 22 other nationalities.  All of the U.S. citizen students were dependents of U.S. business and foundation employees or other private U.S. citizens. Facilities: The school is housed in a 10-building campus built to U.S. standards.  It has 19 classrooms, a science laboratory, art, music, audio-visual, and computer rooms.  All buildings are air-cooled or air-conditioned.  A large playing field is situated on the school grounds along with basketball and volleyball courts.  There is also a large covered area used for physical education and other school activities.

Finances: In the 2001-02 school year, about 98 per cent of the school’s income derives from tuition.  As of August 2000, the annual tuition rates are as follows: Pre-kindergarten - $3,800; Kindergarten-Grade 5 - $7,800; Grade 6-8 - $8,250; Grade 9-10 - $9,800, Grade 11 and 12 -  $10,700.   There is also a yearly English As A Second Language (ESL) fee of $500 for students who require it.   A one time Capital Development Fee of $1,600 is required of new students and a tuition deposit of $1,000 is required in May for students returning in August.  The tuition deposit is applied to tuition, but non-refundable in the event the student does not return.  All fees are payable in U.S. dollars except for host-country nationals who pay in local currency with some exceptions.  (All fees quoted in U.S. Dollars).
