The Khartoum American School (KAS) is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from nursery (2 year olds) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities.  The School was founded in 1957. The school year comprises 4 quarters of approximately 9 weeks each and extends from mid-August to the end of May.

Organization:  The School is governed by a 9-member school board, 8 of whom are elected for 2-year terms by the Khartoum American School Parents' Association and 1 who is appointed by the U.S. Embassy.  Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school.

Curriculum:  KAS provides a student-centered environment.  The curriculum seeks to be inquiry-based and international in scope.  The language of instruction is English and resources are from the United States. The school’s core curriculum includes Language Arts (English), math, science, social studies, and foreign language (French or Arabic). The core curriculum is supplemented by music, art and computer studies offered by specialist teachers. The high school curriculum includes a number of electives as well as Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English Literature, Studio Art, World History, Economics, and Psychology.  American students have little or no difficulty moving from or to schools in the United States.  The school-testing program utilizes standardized achievement tests administered to all students in grade 3-9 as well as PSAT and SAT.  The School is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Council of International Schools.

Faculty: In the 2007-2008 school year, there were 27 (including the superintendent) full-time and 3 part-time faculty members and 6 teaching assistants.  Of the total, 18 are U.S. citizens.

Enrollment:  At the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year, enrollment was 231.  Of the total, 32 were U.S. citizens, 30 were host-country nationals and 169 were third-country nationals from 45 countries.

Facilities:  The School is housed in a 11-building campus built to U.S. standards.  It has 27 classrooms, a science laboratory, art, music, audio-visual, and a state-of-the-art computer lab with 25 iMac computers and high-speed internet.  All buildings are air-cooled or air-conditioned.  A large playing field is situated on the school grounds along with basketball and volleyball courts.  There is also a large covered area used for physical education and other school activities.

Finances:   In the 2007-2008 school year, about 98% of the School’s income derives from tuition.  Annual tuition rates for 2008-2009 are as follows:  Nursery and Pre-K: $5,500; K-8: $12,200; and grades 9-12: $15,200.  An annual capital fee of $400 is required of all students in grades Nursery and Pre-K, $1,000 in grades K through 8 and $1,200 for Grades 9 through 12.  There is a $200 application fee for Nursery to Grade 4 and $250 for Grades 5 through 12.  All fees are payable in U.S. dollars except for host-country nationals who pay in local currency, with some exceptions.  All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.
