Regional Information Resource Officer Visit to Sudan

On March 14, the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum organized a training session on “Using the internet for research.” The workshop was led by Karen Hartman, the U.S. Department of State’s Nairobi-based Regional Information Resource Officer.  The session offered the Sudanese audience a unique opportunity to learn about the many specialized information resources available on the internet.  For example, workshop participants learned about a directory of open access journals, http://www.doaj.org, which contains 2,599 journals from around the world in different fields.  They also discovered the benefits of using the directory of BioMed Central at http://www.biomedcentral.com, which is a publisher of more than 170 peer-reviewed open access journals in the fields of medicine, chemistry, and biology.

The workshop was hosted by a Sudanese NGO, Sudanese Association for Archiving
Knowledge, and was attended by 25 participants representing libraries, civil society groups, academic institutions, and the media. Ms. Hartman discussed different techniques to search and research the Web, and to browse directories on the internet.  Participants also had a fruitful discussion about the importance of documentation, archiving, information resources, freedom of access to information, and access to the internet in Sudan.
