Ramadan Iftar dinner
September 2008 The U.S. embassy hosted a Ramadan Iftar dinner for approximately 100 guests in Khartoum.
Special Envoy Williamson Visits Sudan
August 2008 During a visit to Sudan from August 8-14, President Bush's Special Envoy to Sudan, Ambassador Richard S. Williamson, had productive meetings with the Government of National Unity. SE Williamson visited Khartoum, Abyei, Agok, and Darfur during his visit to Sudan.
Embassy Opens Information Resource Center
August 2008 The U.S. embassy in Khartoum opened its Information Resource Center (IRC) on August 13, 2008. The IRC is now open to the public for research on United States, current events, and other issues.
Embassy Book Donation Benefits Rufa'ah Youth
July 2008 The U.S. embassy’s Public Diplomacy team visited Rufa’ah (Al Gezira State), where they met with administrators and teachers at the Lutfi Ahlia College and explained the many ways the embassy is reaching out to Sudanese youth. The school received scores of reference books in both English and Arabic.
Southern Sudan Archives Project
July 2008 The U.S. mission in Sudan has given a grant of approximately $70,000 to support the collection, organization, preservation, and storage of key records which make up the Southern Sudan Archives. This project will make the archives accessible to the general public, government officials, and scholars.
Special Envoy Williamson Visits Sudan
May-June 2008 As part of ongoing discussions with the government of Sudan, U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Rich Williamson arrived in Khartoum on May 28, 2008 for a weeklong stay. Special Envoy Williamson held talks with senior government officials of the Government of National Unity and the Government of Southern Sudan.
Promoting the Teaching of English
May 2008 The U.S. Department of State's Cairo-based Regional English Language Officer George Scholz conducted six workshops for teachers of English and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at the beginning of May. All told, more than 200 Sudanese educators benefited from his workshops, which were conducted in Khartoum, Omdurman, and Wad Madani.
U.S. Journalist Offers Training to Aspiring News Writers
May, 2008 In keeping with its commitment to strengthening the tenets of a free press, the U.S. embassy in Khartoum sponsored a training workshop on basic journalism skills taught by USA Today’s Baghdad Bureau Chief, Charles Levinson, from May 4 to May 8, 2008.
Charge Fernandez Visits Kassala
May 4, 2008 U.S. Charge d'Affaires Alberto Fernandez visited Kassala to hold meetings with local politicians, examine the Al Gash river, and visit a teaching hospital with USAID officers.
CPA Solidarity Week
April 2008 The U.S. Consulate General in Juba and the Government of Southern Sudan celebrated the benefits of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) with CPA Solidarity Week, with each day celebrating a different theme (education, democracy & governance, health, and economic growth.)
