Support for Senegalese Mediation of Chad-Sudan Situation

March 19, 2008

The United States welcomes the March 13 Accord signed between Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno and Sudanese President Omar Hassan El Bashir.  We applaud Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade for his initiative in facilitating this agreement.

The U.S. calls for both Sudan and Chad to take immediate steps to ensure that no support is provided to rebels from their neighbor.  We call again on Sudan, Chad, and rebel groups to cease all cross border intrusions.

Given the record of previous broken agreements we believe that it is incumbent on both governments, other countries in the region, and the broader international community to support full implementation of the Dakar Accord. Both countries must commit to enforce and implement this as too many innocent lives are at stake. The U.S. continues support for a rapid deployment of the EU Force and the UN Mission to the Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT), as well as the UN/AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), which will facilitate humanitarian operations and peace efforts in the region.  [PDF 112 kb] [MS Word 42 kb]
