U.S. Journalist Offers Training to Aspiring New Writers

May 4, 2008

In keeping with its commitment to strengthening the tenets of a free press, the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum sponsored a training workshop on basic journalism skills by USA Today’s Baghdad Bureau Chief, Charles Levinson, from May 4 to May 8, 2008. The 24 participants at the workshop were either journalism students or entry-level journalists drawn from a cross-section of local universities and local Arabic and English language newspapers. The workshop, which was conducted in Arabic, was made possible through a grant from the Africa Regional Services based in Paris and the U.S. Embassy on the one hand, and the Sudan National Press and Publications Council on the other.  After the workshop, both the participants and the National Press and Publications Council expressed the desire for additional courses, with emphasis on conflict reporting and elections reporting.
