International Education Week 2007

Embassy Investing in Sudan's Future

The U.S. Embassy in Khartoum used the occasion of International Education Week (November 12-16, 2007) to further demonstrate its commitment to fostering mutual understanding and to improving learning opportunities for Sudanese students.  On November 14, the Embassy’s Public Affairs Section visited Ahfad University for Women in Omdurman and donated dozens of books to the school’s library.  The donation included books on African-American history, international relations, American literature, and the INFOUSA CD that many libraries use for retrieving information about the United States.  On hand to receive the books and to discuss other avenues of cooperation between the Embassy and the university was Ahfad Vice President Dr. Gasim Badri, who received his PhD and MA from the University of California.  During the campus visit, the Embassy staff observed the student debate class debating the pros and cons of polygamy.

During the week, some of Sudan’s newspapers published U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice’s statement on the occasion of International Education Week.  The Public Affairs Section also distributed several education-related articles in English and in Arabic to local newspapers.

Secretary Rice’ statement and various USINFO articles pertaining to education can be found at the following sites:
