Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens
U.S. Embassy Sudan
August 1, 2013
The Department of State has instructed certain U.S. embassies and consulates to remain closed or to suspend operations on Sunday, August 4. The Department has been apprised of information that, out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installations, indicates we should institute these precautionary steps. It is possible we may have additional days of closings as well, depending on our analysis. Accordingly, the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum will be closed on Sunday, August 4. If you are a U.S. citizen, you can contact the Embassy anytime at +249-1-870-22000.
The Department, when conditions warrant, takes steps like this to balance our continued operations with security and safety. However, beyond this announcement we do not discuss specific threat information, security considerations or measures, or other steps we may be taking.
For further information, we refer you to the Worldwide Caution put out by the Department dated February 19, 2013.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Sudan enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate.
Regularly monitor the State Department's website, where you can find the current Travel Warning for Sudan, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Sudan. For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” on the State Department’s website.
