Black History Month Celebration in Sudan’s Cultural Capital

The U.S. Embassy in Khartoum has launched a series of activities designed to celebrate Black History Month this February. On February 7, the Embassy partnered with the Abdelkarim Merghani Cultural Center in Sudan’s cultural capital, Omdurman, to show two documentary films on the lives of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X. Some 65 people, including a large number of youth, academics, and human rights activists, attended. A discussion on the Civil Rights Movement and the obstacles faced by freedom lovers around the world ensued.
Audience members cited their own dreams of equity and coexistence in a better society, adopting Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech as their own. Participants discussed how Dr.

King, Malcolm X, and other African-American personalities have inspired them. Members of a Sudanese organization to promote non-violence said they viewed King as an idol for the non-violent movement.
Some recalled the unfortunate events following the death of Sudanese leader John Garang, when thousands of Northerners and Southerners clashed. Others underscored the need for self-restraint and respect for others’ rights.
