Al-Sahafa Forum
On February 24, the Arabic daily newspaper “Al Sahafa” organized a monthly forum for media professionals in Khartoum and invited the Embassy Public Affairs Officer to speak to more than 30 print journalism professionals about the historical role of the African-American press in the United States. A former writer and photographer with two different African-American publications, Mr. Maybury discussed the origins and aims of this specialized press, its continuing influence today, and the editorial stand the African-American press takes vis-à-vis issues related to Sudan. The journalists, most of whom were not aware that such a press existed in the United States, questioned whether this was evidence that racial integration had not yet taken place. “Al Sahafa” published an article about the presentation on February 25.
